Everyone had been writing their web pages, personal homepage, blogs in the past…. While you should probably be using Facebook already, have you ever thought about writing your own Facebook application? Writing Facebook application sounds difficult, however, once you get used to it, it is nothing more than developing simple web application by using PHP and mySQL. You can choose to write the facebook application in other languages too (e.g. flash, asp).

To start with, you can first come up with a simple idea. For example, you can develop a little question-and-answer type of quiz, a polling application that allow user to express their opinions.

To write your own Facebook Application, what you need are actually nothing more than that are needed for writing your personal home page or developing a web site.

Basically what you need are:

You own web space. The web space should be able to serve dynamic pages (such as php or asp pages). If your application needs to store its own data, your need to have a database also. Most of the web hosting company can provide these service. If you want a free web space, you can try the Facebook Developer Program in Joyent.com. (I know from other people that they are using it and haven’t tried it myself.) Be careful when choosing a web hosting!! There are people that buy web hosting service but turns out the web hosting company does not set their server properly and this causes problem in hosting facebook application. These includes user cannot obtain the session, infinite looping when user accessing the hosted application etc.An web authoring software such as Dreamweaver.Most of all, you need to have a Facebook account so that you can register your Facebook application.
